1st Week with Seminars

It's Monday so it's the start of my second week which is when our seminar classes start. Two of my classes have seminars which happen once a week for an hour with smaller groups for more focused discussion. Today I had seminar for my Sociology class. I had regular lecture for Sociology this morning at 9:15 and then seminar was at 11:15. All we did today was that the professor asked us if we had any questions on the class so far and no one did, so he put us into groups of six to introduce ourselves, discuss why we are taking the class and find out what each of us knows about sociology so far. (Does he really expect the groups to talk about Sociology?).

Although the seminar was pretty much pointless as far as Sociology goes it was fun to get to know some classmates. I was the only one not a local and so a lot of questions got pointed toward me. They were all very impressed that I had the guts to study abroad as all of them said they did not. I also got a lot of questions because I am a senior. This is Introduction to Sociology and it's a 100 level class. It is going toward my diversity credit that everyone needs to graduate from WSU. Seeing as it is a first year class all of the students in my group are first years and so they asked me lots of questions about college. I was happy to answer, but I kept telling them that I was not from here and have heard a lot that things are different over here...but they were still very curious about a lot of things.

After I got done with seminar I came back to my room. Ally and I were going to go into Belfast today but some things came up for me so that didn't happen. I have a couple things I need to figure out for my classes that I'm having a bit of trouble with. I still can't log into the universities website which is a problem towards my classes as there is online information. Also, I tried to go to the library to possibly find some of the books for readings that I need to do. This did NOT happen. I went to the library and it's so strange...you don't see any books! I don't know where they keep them hahahahaha...but all you see when you go in the library is hundreds and hundreds of computers...literally. I was going to go to the help desk but it was so busy in there that I just didn't want to wait so I came back. I could have gone a little later with Ally into Belfast but she ended up just going alone. The reason she was going was to find something to wear for our Provost's Dinner tomorrow night. She wanted to take the train and it doesn't run later in the day so she just went shopping herself. I'm just going to wear the brown work pants I brought with me and a nice top. It is just semi formal.

This Provost's Dinner that I'm talking about is called the Annual Provost's Reception that is put on by some of the faculty at the University to welcome the new international students to the community. The international office staff told us that it will be a great opportunity for us to meet the staff of the University and local students and also....FREE DINNER! :)

I'm at the point now where it isn't that I don't like any of the stuff here...I just miss the stuff at home. I don't like going grocery shopping. It was exciting to at first because everything was new and exciting. However, now I just find myself missing all the normal things I would find at the store, and also am really starting to realize how expensive everything is. It all seems such similar in price...and then you realize that when you're spending 1 pound....that's pretty close to double in dollars so it isn't as good a deal as you thought. Too much thinking is having to be put into shopping and it makes it a little less fun.

So that was my day and that's a sneak peak at my tomorrow night. Hope everyone is having a great October so far! It's crazy....before I left I knew I would be gone for 3 1/2 months...it's already down to 3!!!! My "countdown calendar" informs me that there are 85 days until I come home and only 75 until my parents get here!! :)
