Today was an excellent day!
...Ignoring the fact that I had to sit through two hours of political science lecture followed by another hour of political science seminar. But as I said...we can ignore that! (The one good thing about seminar is that they guy I sit next to sounds just like Hugh Grant).
I went to the library this morning prior to class (I actually got to give some girls directions to a place on campus while I was walking to the library!!! Makes me feel more at home when I know I know the place better than the freshman do!) and asked at the information desk how to use the computers to print as I needed to print an article for that afternoon's seminar. First I had to go to this machine that is like a vending machine for cards. You put in 3 pound coins and get back a "wee print card" as the lady at the desk asked me if I had yet. It's just like any other card you would put in your wallet. After you get that card you go to the computer and log in and pull up what it is you wish to print and then you select to print at one of the printers in the library...I'm glad I asked the guy next to me if he knew which printer was closest because he told me that the closest is broken and showed me which one to use. Then, you go over to this little machine by the printer you chose and that is where you stick your "wee print card" in and pay. Then you can get your papers from the printer! I've found out it is NOT cheap to print...I may look into the price of a cheap printer here. I started with 3 pounds and when I was done printing I have 75 pence left...I only printed 5 pages!!!
**Alright...so I was doing the math to figure out how much that cost me per page and had to take about a five minute break to go stand out in the cold (it's 9pm here) because our fire alarms went off again...same reason, because's of a girls shower. Apparently the smoke alarms are heat and smoke detectors and apparently Renee's detector is very sensitive! The guys came and shut it off and are now headed over to block 15 to shut their's off hahahaha. Nonetheless...back to my blog!**
Anyways...that's 45 pence per page!!! That's like just under a dollar a page! Pretty sure investing in a cheap printer would save me A LOT.
I was on my way out of the library and decided to stop by the Union Shop. I hadn't been there yet and really wanted a University of Ulster sweatshirt so I wanted to see if they had anything I liked. I ended up getting a green hoodie and I LOVE it! :) So used to the school spirit back home...
After printing the pages and shopping I was headed back to my room to get my things for class and passed my flatmate Renee as she was headed to campus. She stopped me to tell me that I have mail and to check mailbox D. The way the mail is here is that there is a mailbox for every letter of the alphabet and they organize it by last name. I've already gotten one letter from my mom in mailbox M but apparently they look at my capital D and put it in D because I had SIX LETTERS!!!!! Now, three were from the bank because I opened an account at Ulster Bank here on campus. One was my card, one was my pin and one I think might be deposit slips or something??? Not sure what the third thing is exactly... But the three other letters were all from Kay!!! She sent me pictures and you have no idea how happy that made me. She must have read my mind because ever since I got here I've been regretting not bringing pictures to decorate with...but now I have some!!! :)
After I finished my classes I came back to my room to get ready for tonight's Provost's Reception. It was semi formal so I wore my brown work pants and a nice shirt. I also did my hair and make up. :) It was a lot of fun. We started out with just mingling around and meeting different international students and faculty at the University. Then, the head of the University (he isn't the dean...I don't remember what he's called...sorry) gave a welcome speech that just introduced us to all the staff that was attending and to tell us that he was very glad to have us at the University and then he told us to go eat! The food was all very fun...I didn't know what anything was (except the chicken strips haha) but it was all very good and all cute little finger food! My favorite was a little dessert that looked like a miniature maple bar and was stuffed with a coffee mousse. Here's a picture that Ally and I took of ourselves looking all sharp! ;)
Now I'm back in my room drinking some tea to warm up from standing out in the cold waiting for the fire alarm to get shut off! I have a very quiet flat and will for the next week. Rachel and Jessi left for Rome today...they are spending the night in Dublin and headed off tomorrow. They will be gone until next Tuesday I believe! Jessi has a friend studying abroad in Rome and they are staying with her. This means I won't have to hear them being ridiculously loud at 2 in the morning after coming in from a night of drinking. I enjoy going out...but not on a school night...too difficult to get out of bed the next morning!
Until tomorrow! :)
