Today I only had the one lecture of sociology and it was a depressing one on "the dark side of family life" as they put it...divorce, child abuse, domestic abuse, real fun stuff. But like I said with that lecture out of the way I'm half way to being done which is incredibly exciting.
Other than class I have done a whole lot of sitting around doing nothing. It was my one day of lazy weekend because tomorrow I'm going to pack and head of on a wonderful adventure to Amsterdam with Ally. We had to go outside yet again for the fire alarm because of my flatmates shower. They have now decided she probably needs a new one...no duh! I did do one exciting thing today though! Jessi, Rachel and I have officially purchased our flights for Scotland!!!!! I now have all of my travel plans set in stone and purchased which is a great feeling! We do still need to find a place to stay but that will be easy. We will be leaving Friday, December 9th after Rachel finishes her class and head for Edinburgh. Then, I'm flying back by myself on Sunday, December 11th (the girls are staying til Monday night) because I have my last Sociology seminar and when I said I would be gone that class the prof hinted heavily at the fact that I would want to be there but didn't have to be if I didn't want so I'm going. Which is fine, I don't mind flying back alone. I'm just excited to be going to Scotland!!!!!
Now...for the post I've been saying the past two days I would do. Here is my Halloween night:
There was a very large group of us that went to Derry for Halloween and our accommodations office at the university rented a bus to take up there and back. I'm very bad at guestimating group numbers of people but I'll take a stab and say there was around 30 of us. We got on the bus at 4pm and headed towards Derry which is a little over a two hour bus drive with a 10 minute potty stop about half way. The first hourish was a lot of picture taking, a lot of the frenchies chanting songs in french (which they do quite often when they're together with the international group) and a lot of very loud fun.
We had to take a picture of our tights/dresses because it was too cute that we were pretty much opposite...her dress was blue and my tights were teal but close enough! Nice...I just realized I got the camera cord in the picture as well. :P
It is already hard to take good pictures of sunsets, let alone from inside a bus AND from inside a bus that it is also raining outside. However, it was ridiculously gorgeous and so I tried really hard...this was the best one that came out.
Most people's plans for the night were to get as drunk as they could for as cheap as they could so this included making their own drinks in pop bottles and whatnot and bringing beer bottles with them but they ran into the problem of the bus driver not allowing any liquids on the bus (not too surprised there). So, when it came to the 10 minute potty stop it was less of a potty stop and more of a, let's get out and get into the bus underneath storage and drink! We also took pictures during the stop.
The second half of the bus drive to Derry got...well...interesting. Not sure if it was from the "potty stop" or just from sheer boredom having to be trapped on a bus for that long but there were dance parties in the isle and at one point a line down the isle way of people sitting between each others legs to catch the person in front who would jump up and "crowd surf" over everyone.
I FINALLY FIGURED OUT HOW TO GET A VIDEO TO POST! It just takes a lot of patience I guess...which I haven't had before when posting these blogs. I can't upload videos over like 30 seconds, it just won't even let me try. I've been able to get them to start loading before but I usually post right before going to sleep and I started this one earlier in the day and just let it continue loading. Takes hours...but I'm pretty sure that has something (or everything) to do with the fact that my internet really isn't the speediest thing around. But...yay my first video!!! I've got two more I'm going to try to add to this blog and then I'll do a random blog with the other videos I've taken that are short enough to upload soon! :) This is exciting for me...you have no idea haha. Anyway...back to the crazy bus trip pictures.
We finally got to Derry at about 6:30pm and they dropped us off on campus (The college I go to here, University of Ulster, has four campuses. Derry is where the Magee campus is.) and then they walked us down to the water for the festivities. The parade started at 7 and only lasted for about 20 min and then we stood around waiting for what seemed like FOREVER (It was freezing...and we were all wearing small amounts of clothing. Mostly it was my feet that hurt from how cold they were. By the time we got food my pinky toes and the toe next to them were numb.) but they started at 8 o'clock.
The fireworks were soooo worth it to wait for! They lasted about 15 minutes and I swear most of it was like our firework finales! They were also fairly well organized to songs which made it even more fun. Since they lasted about 15 minutes and we had to be back up at the bus by 9:30 to get our tickets to the party in the student union on the Magee campus we had about an hour to eat (giving ourselves 15 minutes to get back to the bus from the restaurant). We found a chinese restaurant called China China and it was pretty good. It was just a chinese buffet but it was better than the Super China Buffet's we have back home. It was also warm, they served us tea and they had restrooms so we were beyond pleased. Oh...by the way we didn't all stick together to go eat. Different groups of people went to different restaurants. I can see you all imagining our group of 30 bombarding a small chinese buffet but it was just Ally, Jing, Fatim, Andrea and me.
Once we got our tickets for the party we headed up on to campus with strict directions to be back at the bus by 1:30am or we would not be returning to Jordanstown. The party was very fun. Tons of drinking and dancing for hours and hours.
At one point in the night Mario got ahold of the camera and would NOT stop taking picture after picture of Meghan and me...made for some suuuper attractive shots.
Rebecca and I decided that there needed to be a picture of the two red heads of the group so here's that one haha.
We weren't supposed to take drinks out on the dance floor but people still did and then proceeded to drop them and break them (wonder why we weren't supposed to...) so the floor got quite slippery. Poor JM and Ramses ended up on the floor. However, it may have been a combination of too much alcohol mixed with the slippery floor because I didn't see anyone else go down haha.
About two hours in the middle there was a band that was very good and played fun music to dance to. The only complaint I had with them was that it was much too loud. I don't mind loud but at one point Ally tried to scream something directly into my ear to tell me something and I had no idea haha. They also had fun costumes on to celebrate Halloween. :)
Overall it was a great night and everyone had a blast. Thankfully for the bus ride back everyone calmed down and we could sleep which made the drive go a lot faster. We got back a little before 4am and poured ourselves into bed.
Best picture of the night in my opinion. Too bad it isn't everyone. There is one of everyone at the rest stop but I don't know who's camera it got taken on and it hasn't shown up on Facebook yet. But...this shows a good portion of the new family I've gained here at Jordanstown. :)
Oh and also...I leave for Amsterdam tomorrow and am not taking my computer so it will be a group email of all my nights this following Sunday night just like my one from my Killary weekend....see you all in a couple of days!!!
